22 Aug WhatsApp to Tackle Problem with Fake News and Conflict with Privacy
Last Monday, Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp announced that they are looking for more ways to fight fake news on its platform.
However, software engineer Alan Kao says that it is a complex situation since WhatsApp now uses end-to-end encryption, which means only the sender and the receiver see the message. He adds that while the company definitely does not want fake news on the platform, it is difficult to determine what is fake, and even then, they are unable to see what gets sent because of the encryption.
Kao assures that WhatsApp is taking steps on the matter which include explaining to users that they should verify the authenticity of the content before sharing it. There is also a feature that allows users to report objectionable content to the authorities.
