02 Mar WhatsApp Declines Data Sharing with SEBI on Grounds of Privacy
WhatsApp has reportedly declined to share user information with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), saying that it would violate the app’s privacy policy.
Sebi sought the information from WhatsApp as part of its investigation into rumors of information leakage on blue-chip companies being circulated via the secure messaging app.
Experts said that Whatsapp is not obliged to provide the information to SEBI, and the matter may end up going to court. In response, SEBI said that holding unpublished information was not a crime in itself, but using the information for trading is an offense.
