Watchdog Says Data Collection a Threat to Freedom

Senior fellow at the Israel Democracy Institute Dr. Tehilla Shwartz Altshuler recently said that governments will have to work against the threat to democracy posed by the collection of personal data.

Altshuler emphasized that it was not enough for people to have control over their data as established in the new European Data Protection Regulation, there has to be a standardized and global legislation that clearly dictates what kind of data should not be collected, such as biometric and some healthcare data, as well as emotional and well-being data.

Altshuler also warned that IoT (Internet of Things) devices that use numerous sensors and are connected to central databases will make data privacy even more of an issue.
