02 Jan Utah Seeks to Pass First Digital Privacy Law
Utah may likely be the first state to pass a digital privacy law as state representative Craig Hall recently sponsored House Bill 57 which seeks to offer more protection for online data such as emails and instant messages.
Under the bill, any “individual who transmits electronic information or data is the presumed owner of the electronic information or data,” and would require “issuance of a search warrant to obtain certain electronic information or data.”
Rep. Hall said the legislation should ensure that users do not lose any ownership interest or reasonable expectation of privacy when their data is processed by a third party, like Google, Facebook or Dropbox.
