06 Dec Use of Telehealth by Retail Outlets Raise Privacy Concerns
Researchers from UC Davis School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School recently expressed their concerns on the use of telehealth by retail outlets such as Walmart and Walgreens.
Peter Yellowlees, MD, professor of psychiatry at UC Davis Health, said that telehealth, which uses technologies like smart home devices, collect and store patient data which is accessed by commercial retailers. The lack of policies on merging protected health information with non-PHI data is an area of concern, Yellowlees said.
Keisuke Nakagawa, MD of UC Davis Health’s meanwhile said that it is important to monitor developments and consolidations in the health care market to ensure that policies are well-designed, relevant and anticipate future applications of telehealth.
