29 Dec US Senators Urge FTC to Probe Google Over COPPA Violations
Senators Richard Blumenthal, Ed Markey, and Tom Udall recently sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and request that the agency investigate possible Children’s Online Privacy and Protection Act (COPPA) violations by the Google Play app store.
The senators said that based on the research conducted by the Campaign for Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC) and the Center for Digital Democracy (CDD), Google may be promoting apps in its Play Store that may be sharing children’s personal data, include content or advertising not appropriate for children, or fail to implement reasonable security practices in accordance with COPPA.
The lawmakers added that apps such as Elmo and Furby in the Google Play Family section shared users’ persistent identifiers with third parties in an unencrypted form.
