24 Jan US Data Broker Sells Location Data to Bounty Hunters, Lobbies Against User Consent
A data broker called Zumigo was recently revealed to have lobbied the FCC significantly in 2017 to remove requirements around user consent. The third-party company, which gets data directly from telcos like AT&T and Sprint, also reportedly sold the data to unauthorized parties such as bounty hunters.
The firm gave a presentation to FCC where it attempted to justify its requests, saying that financial and personal protections now equal or outweigh privacy concerns. It additionally urged the Commision to make the release of carrier data opt-out, rather than opt-in, when it is being used to prevent fraud and identity theft.
