02 Jun US Commerce Secretary Says GDPR May Cause Disruption
US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross warned this week that the EU’s new privacy rules may cause some serious problems for business, medical research and law enforcement on both sides of the Atlantic.
Ross, who is the highest ranking official to have spoken on the GDPR, says that the understanding of what is required to comply has been vague so far, and this could lead to the disruption of transatlantic cooperation on financial regulation, medical research, emergency management coordination, and important commerce.
Ross stressed that such important activities are critical to building trust in the internet, safeguarding infrastructure, and protecting the public and needs to be weighed carefully against privacy concerns.
