30 Oct UN Special Rapporteur Calls Australia’s Anti-Encryption Bill “Fatally Flawed”
In a letter to the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security, UN Special Rapporteur on the right to privacy Joe Cannataci called Australia’s Assistance and Access Bill “fatally flawed” and an “unnecessary infringement of basic liberties.”
He added that it is unlikely to be workable in some respects and it is technically questionable whether it can achieve its aims without introducing vulnerabilities.
Cannataci was also not convinced by the oversight and transparency measures in the Bill, particularly the lack of judicial oversight and the ability for heads of agencies to approve actions by their own people.
