Ukraine Faces New Cyber Threat after NotPetya Infection

Computers in a shared network with infected M.E.Doc software may have to face more trouble following the NotPetya attack.

The attack is a smokescreen to make the virus look like ransomware to hide its true intentions, according to deputy head of Ukraine’s presidential administration and former Microsoft director in Ukraine, Dmytro Shymkiv.

Around 80 percent of companies in Ukraine use the M.E.Doc service. This translates to roughly 1 million computers in the country where the software is installed. The company initially denied allegations of being the source of the infection, but confirmed that a backdoor exists within the software last Wednesday.
