22 Dec UK Sees Significant Increase in Data Protection Cases in 2018
A recent report by GDPRPLAN.com showed that UK consumers have been reporting data protection violation in droves this year, showing that the public’s awareness on privacy rights is growing.
The report said that the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is now working on 24,319 cases, including non-data protection ones, a 133% increase from 2017. As much as 21,162 cases were also filed this year, 87 percent of which concern breaches of data protection legislation, including GDPR. This number is 8 percent higher than the number last year, an increase of 12,069 cases before GDPR came into effect.
However, it was also noted that many of the cases filed were probably about violations of the 1998 Data Protection Act, as GDPRPLAN was unable to determine the specific law in each case.
