29 May UK Pornography Pass Raises Privacy Fears
A new proposal that will require porn sites in the UK to compel users to provide their real ages has sparked concerns from both providers and users who fear that the move may raise privacy risks and may impact independent provider disproportionately.
The one-age verification proposal which comes from the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), will be a part of an overhaul of the UK’s digital services mandated by the 2017 Digital Economy Act. It will require viewers to provide identification details in person to obtain a code which they can use to get access on the site.
A BBFC spokesperson said that the proposal makes sense since children are not allowed to enter a sex shop in real life, which is a kind of protection that should also be applied online.
