14 Nov UK Data Authority Jails Car Repairman for Data Theft
The Information Commissioner’s Office said this week that for the first time, an individual will be handed a prison sentence for a case that it has prosecuted.
The case involves a car repairman by the name of Mustafa Kasim who was found guilty of stealing accident information, names, phone numbers, and vehicle details from a former employer. Kasim also used the login details of a former co-worker to illegally access the information.
The ICO typically prosecutes cases like this under the Data Protection Act, which does not lead to a prison sentence. However, it opted to use the Computer Misuse Act on this occasion which gives the court greater latitude in terms of sentencing.
