07 Aug UIDAI: Google Mistake Being Used to Stoke Aadhaar Fears
The Unique Identification Authority of India said last Sunday that parties with vested interests are taking advantage of a Google mistake to sow fears against India’s biometric database system.
This was in response to the tweets of French cyber security expert “Elliot Alderson” revealing the presence of UIDAI’s old helpline number on the phones of Indian users.
The Aadhaar authority responded that a number stored in the contact list of a mobile phone cannot lead to the theft of data. This follows Google’s admission last Friday that had “inadvertently coded” the UIDAI’s old helpline number into the contact list of smartphones of Indian Android users in 2014.
