Supported by official government documents and patent filings, it is said that the US government is pouring million of dollars into identifying patterns in posts across platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, to predict major domestic events.
It was also noted that the current US administration moved to update a doctrine on homeland defense allowing domestic agencies to access Pentagon intelligence, especially in the context of emergencies. One expert even suggested that the changes in the doctrine could be part of the efforts by the Trump administration to adapt to the technological developments in social media surveillance.
