21 Nov Top Universities Secretly Snoop on Alumni Earnings
A number of top institutions included in the Russell Group had apparently hired investigators to snoop on the finances of their alumni in an effort to raise donations.
It is said that the screening firms were able to obtain sensitive details such as incomes, investments, pensions, value of their homes, and even friendship circles. There were also reports of former students being contacted for donations, despite being on the “no-call list”.
The Information Commissioner’s Office, with support from the Department of Education, has now launched an investigation on the matter. Commissioner Elizabeth Denham said that the law requires full disclosure from parties who wish to obtain an individual’s personal data.
