Tencent Denies Keeping WeChat Histories

China’s most popular messaging platform, WeChat, recently denied allegations that it was storing chat histories. The Tencent-owned app chalked the criticisms as a matter of “pure misunderstanding”.

It is said that the allegations were started by a comment of Li Shufu, a Chinese businessman, who recently said the company “must be watching all our WeChats every day”. Li is the owner of Geely Holdings which owns Volvo, and is one of the largest auto manufacturers in the country.

In response, Tencent said that they do not keep any chat histories, nor do they use chats for big data analysis. They maintained that such histories and logs are only kept locally in the user’s device.
