Telegram CEO Says User Data Still Safe with New Privacy Policy

Telegram founder Pavel Durov assured the secure messaging app’s users that their data is still safe and will not be handed over to Russian authorities.

The statement came after Telegram announced its new privacy policy, which says that a user’s IP address and phone number could be turned over if a court order says that the user in question has links to extremism or terrorism.

Durov also revealed that they had no real privacy policy to start with and had to come up with one to comply with the GDPR. He added that while no terrorists’ data has been shared with authorities yet, their theoretical ability to do so should discourage terrorists from abusing the platform.
