Tech Gifts for Seniors May Pose Privacy Risk

Experts at the Pew Research Centre’s Internet Project recently advised against giving tech gadgets as gifts to older users, stating that they may be “sitting ducks” for technology that could invade their privacy.

It is said that senior citizens may not understand that new gadgets such as wearable devices may now breach privacy boundaries which were once protected by the courts. Experts pointed out that devices like smart watches used for medication reminders or detecting falls may also gather and send data to insurance companies.

Microsoft researcher Danah Boyd also said that powerful actors often design technical systems that produce outcomes favorable to them, at the expense of those who are less powerful.
