Tech Giants File Brief Pushing for Greater Mobile Phone Privacy

Washington, USA – A number of tech companies and wireless operators, including some of the biggest names in Silicon Valley, filed a brief with the court last Monday for the dispute on cellphone data privacy.

The brief, also signed by Google, Apple, Facebook, Twitter, and Snap, urged for greater privacy protections under the law for personal data collected through digital devices.

This call to the US Supreme Court came as a response to an incident where federal prosecutors used cell site location information obtained from a cellphone carrier to land a conviction in a 2013 robbery case.

American Civil Liberties Union attorney Nathan Freed Wessler says that Verizon’s involvement in the brief was particularly critical since they receive thousands of requests from law enforcement each year.
