14 Dec StatsCan Controversy Prompts Senate to Consider Privacy Legislation Changes
Canada’s Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce recommended this week that Justin Trudeau’s administration update the Privacy Act and the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) to bring Canada in line with international privacy standards.
It also recommended a review of the Statistics Act, which gives Statistics Canada broad powers to collect information from public and private institutions.
Senators also strongly urged that Ottawa restructure the pilot project so personal identifiers will no longer be in the personal banking data that will be shared with Statistics Canada.
