Startup Reveals Geolocation Data of Most Users Already Public

In a recent conference in New York City, Reveal Mobile CEO Brian Handly said that people can now easily search for data such as geolocation, property tax records, or company information. These information are increasingly being made free to the public.

Startups such as Reveal Mobile, Enigma, and Thasos aggregate and sell such data, mainly to enhance ad targeting. While most startups are said to anonymize data, as their interests lies in trends and not on individual users, IBM Watson head of data Pavan Arora says that reputation risk is still present and centralized data sources are still hot targets for hackers, as evidenced by the Equifax hack.

He added that it is best to just not keep any personal, identifiable data, and that maintaining privacy by design from the start promotes safety and creates value.
