Sri Lanka ICTA Wants Access to Public Info Database, May Compromise Privacy

It was reported earlier this week that the Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka is looking to gain access to the database handled by the Department Of Registration of Persons, a move which has raised privacy-related concerns.

It was revealed in a paper submitted by the Ministry of Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure that the ICTA is planning to print digital cards containing private information of citizens. The paper however, was rejected for lack of sufficient information.

The Department Of Registration of Persons had previously objected to the idea, saying that it would be in violation of the individual’s right to privacy.
