Sonos Compels Users Not to Opt-out of New Privacy Policy

Sound system manufacturer Sonos recently rolled out a new privacy policy that gives its users a choice between agreeing to greater data collection, or the reduction of their product’s functionality overtime.

Sonos says that it needs to collect necessary ‘functional data’ such as email addresses, IP addresses, and account login information, as well as device data and other hardware information, to keep the devices functioning properly.

However, a senior attorney from the Electronic Frontier Foundation says that device makers should design their system to separate data collection from product feature, and that storing data locally is more preferable than having it sent back to the manufacturer.
