19 Dec Software Devs Fear of Secret Backdoors Unfounded, Experts Say
Experts assured software developers this week that the new Access and Assistance Bill will not be used to force them to put malware or backdoors into their employer’s products and services.
A Department of Home Affairs staffer who drafted the new laws clarified that a Technical Capability Notice (TCN) cannot be used on individuals within a corporation, and it can only be served on individuals who are their own separate entity.
The staffer, Adam Ingle, added that anyone can go to the courts and determine that argue that the notice is not reasonable, proportionate, technically feasible, practical, or say that it will introduce a systemic vulnerability, and is therefore unlawful.
