Smartphone Manufacturers May Need to Change Data Collection Rules

Experts say that the landmark verdict of the Indian Supreme Court on the matter of privacy should make handset manufacturers reboot their data collection methods and policies.

President of the Internet & Mobile Association of India, Subho Ray, said that the government has to be able to enforce the right to privacy and ensure that companies do not violate the use of any individual’s data.

However, Alok Kumar Prasanna, senior resident fellow at the Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, says the only thing telcos and phone manufacturers might want to do is to clearly inform the user that his data is being collected, and to give the user control over how his data is used.
