‘Smart Parasite’ Protects User Privacy Around Smart Speakers

An open source project which seeks to give smart speaker owners more privacy was released by researchers Bjørn Karmann and Tore Knudsen this month.

Project Alias, which is dubbed a ‘smart parasite’, feeds ‘always listening’ smart speakers such as Google Home and Alexa Echo white noise while allowing users to train custom wake up names, essentially acting as a middle man which communicates and manipulates the smart speaker.

The source code for Project Alias, which runs on a raspberry Pi and a 3D printed part, has been made available on GitHub while build instructions are on Instructables.
