29 Mar Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong the Toughest on Data Breaches in Asia
A recent study by Dell EMC found that Singapore, Australia, and Hong Kong handed down the biggest data breach fines in the region, while Japan, India, and Thailand had some of the lowest.
Singapore’s penalties can going as high as $1 million for non-compliance with its data protection provisions. Australia can impose fines of up to $1.7 million AUD, while Hong Kong’s is around $1 million HK. Data breach fines in Japan are currently only at 1 million JPY and India at 500,000 INR.
However, a previous study by EY pointed out that despite the increasing concern over data protection and privacy compliance, only 10% of companies in Singapore already have plans for GDPR compliance.
