08 Dec Shorten Justifies Passage of Encryption Law
Opposition leader Bill Shorten said this week that despite concerns surrounding Australia’s new encryption-busting legislation, he thought that the result was a “sensible compromise”.
Shorten said that he wasn’t prepared to walk away from his job and leave matters in a stand-off, exposing Australians to increased risk in terms of national security.
The opposition leader said that although the laws were rushed, it was enough to have Senator Cormann in Hansard say that the government would support amendments consistent with the recommendation of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security (PJCIS), and that the amendments would be considered during the first week that Parliament sits in 2019.
