18 Oct Shanghai Airport Unveils Facial Recognition-Powered Self Service Check In
Shanghai’s Hongqiao International Airport began using this week a self-service check in process which is powered by facial recognition technology. Travelers at the airport will now be able to use self-service kiosks for flight and baggage check-in, security clearance, and boarding just by using their face to prove their identities.
Zhang Zheng, general manager of the ground services department for Spring Airlines, the first airline to adopt the system at Hongqiao Airport, says that the full self-service system is a first in China.
The rollout is said to be part of a country-wide rollout of facial recognition systems, with similar systems already being deployed at airports in Beijing and Nanyang city, in central China’s Henan province.
