Scammers Use Fake IRS Sites to Steal Personal Information

The IRS recently issued its yearly warning to the public about scammers and con artists, this time including the mention of new phishing schemes used to steal the sensitive information of taxpayers.

Aside from republishing its “Dirty Dozen” list of tax scams, the IRS advised taxpayers to be cautious of individuals pretending to be from their agency.

In relation to this, security researchers from Zscaler also warned that scammers are updating their tactics, and now use phishing pages that look very much like legitimate Microsoft Office 365, Apple ID, Dropbox or DocuSign websites. The researchers urged users to pay attention to the URL of the sites they are visiting and make sure that the domain name matches the URL, and that it should also be using the HTTPS protocol.
