Ransomware Affects 500,000 in Home Medical Equipment Supplier Attack

Airway Oxygen, a Michigan based home medical equipment supplier was attacked by a ransomware last April, possibly compromising data of 500,000 clients, says a report from U.S Department of Health and Human Services.

According to Airway Oxygen, the breach was discovered on April 18 where a hacker gains access to a network containing personal health information and installs the ransomware.

Affected data contains names, birthdays, addresses, phone numbers, diagnosis, types of service, and information on health insurance. Officials reported that Social Security numbers, credit card, and bank account information are not included.

After the breach, Airway Oxygen performs an internal system scan, changes passwords for all users, reviews and updates firewalls and security tools in place. The company also hires a cyber security firm to investigate the origin and impact of the attack.
