08 Nov Privacy Rights of Individual Becomes Focal Point in Cops vs Aurora, IL
The effect of publicly available online information on an individual’s privacy rights recently came into the spotlight in a case against the city of Aurora, Illinois.
The lawsuit involved the release of officers’ personal information to inmates who were not allowed to access to the internet. The said officers were also the ones who got the inmates imprisoned.
The city argued that the released information was already public record and is not covered by privacy rights. The plaintiff called the argument “misguided”, and pointed out that the inmates didn’t have internet access in the first place. The release of the information also caused the officers involved to live in a constant state of fear due to possible retaliation.
