Privacy of Users in Private Facebook Patient Groups Breached

It was recently reported that the privacy of thousands of women in private Facebook groups had been  violated by marketers using a Chrome plugin that can be used to discover the names and private health information of group members.

The women, who carry mutations in the genes BRCA1 and BRCA2, were members of the BRCA patient group on Facebook. Those who carry the mutation possess a high lifetime risk of developing several types of cancer and usually need to undergo genetic counseling and testing.

The Chrome plug-in has since been removed from all other private groups since the incident.
