19 Jan PNP Defends Profiling of ACT Members
Earlier this week, PNP spokesperson Chief Superintendent Benigno Durana Jr. said that they were within their mandate when they gathered intelligence on ACT members as they were perceived to be allies of organizations considered to be “enemies of the state”.
Durana was reportedly referring to a Youtube video where CPP founding chairman Jose Maria Sison identified “legal democratic forces of the Philippines” which included ACT.
The PNP chief also stressed that the Data Privacy Act does not cover information necessary in order to carry out “the functions of public authority which includes the processing of personal data for the performance by the independent, central monetary authority and law enforcement and regulatory agencies of their constitutionally and statutorily mandated functions.”
