PinMe App Tracks User Location Even When GPS is Off

Stanford researchers recently found that an app called PinMe is able to track the user’s location even without GPS.

PinMe uses the device’s gyroscope and accelerometer to determine the user’s approximate location. It can even detect the user’s mode of travel.

The app usually works in the background, so the user is mostly unaware that he is being tracked. The researchers say that PinMe highlights a major privacy flaw in most modern smartphones, and called on phone manufacturers to include a way to switch the app off.
