07 Dec Philippines Joins (APEC) Cross-Border Privacy Enforcement Arrangement
The Philippines recently became the eleventh member of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Cross-Border Privacy Enforcement Arrangement (CPEA), through the National Privacy Commission (NPC). The CBPR system is an initiative which seeks to facilitate effective information sharing and privacy cooperation for the 21 APEC economies.
According to NPC Chairman Raymund Enriquez Liboro, Philippine-based companies will now be able to get their data privacy and protection systems certified through the CBPR system. Certified businesses will be allowed to transfer data freely across CBPR member countries.
Liboro added that country’s accession to the CPEA should help in resolving their investigation into the Uber 2016 data breach which had also affected the information of users in the Philippines.
