12 Dec Personal Privacy Concerns Raised by Alibaba, Xinhua News Project
A first-of-its-kind news coverage project called Media Brain has recently raised privacy fears for people in China. Born out a partnership between the Alibaba Group and state-run Xinhua News Agency, the project is expected to collect data using billions of CCTVs, IoT devices, and other potential surveillance devices around the country.
At the Fourth World Internet Conference in Wuzhen last week, Alibaba executive chairman Jack Ma revealed that the devices will be able to recognize the five “W’s” – Who, Where, When, What, and Why. The data collected will be used by Xinhua Zhiyun, a news-writing robot platform powered by Alibaba’s cloud, to generate breaking news.
Xinhua Zhiyun CEO Xu Changliang further added that in addition to state-owned cameras, the group is also planning to add data from private entities such as IoT providers.
