Personal Information of North Korean Defectors Stolen in Hack

South Korea’s Ministry of Unification revealed this week that the personal information of 997 North Korean defectors had been stolen by a hacker by targeting an employee at a defector support center with a phishing email.

The support center which got hacked reportedly caters to defectors who relocated in the North Gyeongsang province (Gyeongbuk, formerly Gyeongsangbuk-do). According to authorities investigating the incident, the hackers were able to steal personal details such as names, dates of birth, and home addresses, and it is still unsure whether the attackers belong to one of North Korea’s infamous hacker groups.
