Ontario Plans Use of Highway Patrol Drones, Raises Privacy Concerns

The Ontario government may soon deploy drones to monitor drivers on the roads of the Canadian province, if a deal with a Toronto-based tech company pans out.

The Ontario Provincial Police is looking to use camera-equipped drones to monitor high-occupancy toll (HOT) lanes for law breakers. The Sky Guys, one of the companies chosen by the provincial government, said that using such drones would be more cost-efficient than conventional static cameras.

However, Ontario Minister of Economic Development and Growth issued a statement on the matter, saying that the solution would have to adhere to all relevant privacy regulations.
