New Zealand Privacy Commissioner Seeks Greater Powers to Regulate Facebook

New Zealand Privacy Commissioner John Edwards mentioned this week that his office is seeking new enforcement provisions to be able to regulate tech giant Facebook which is currently dealing with a number of investigations around the world over its handling of personal data.

Edwards is set to ask the parliament for powers similar to other regulators, including the authority to take legal action against companies and hand down penalties.

Edwards has been at loggerheads with Facebook after the social network declined a request by a New Zealand citizen to access personal information held on the accounts of other users.
