New Uber App May be Put Corporate Customer’s Data at Risk

An analysis by security company Appthority showed that the newest version of the Uber app collects more data than the previous versions and transmits it with less security.

Users should now be aware that the latest version can access iOS’ Calendar app and Android’s SMS text message archive. It also grants API access to 633 apps, many of which do not adhere to Uber’s terms of use. Changes such as these increase the risk of corporate data leakage.

Uber spokesperson Katie Curran responded to Appthority’s findings, saying that the security vendor did not use the version currently in the App Store. She also added that Appthority made their conclusions based on incomplete information regarding the sharing of data using Uber’s APIs.
