23 Aug New Technique Uses EM Waves to Retrieve Encryption Keys Within Seconds
Researchers from Georgia State University unveiled a new technique that uses electromagnetic (EM) emanations from a device to retrieve RSA encryption keys much faster than previous methods.
While similar techniques in the past required attackers to place a probe directly on a device’s chips, the new technique detailed by the seven-man team in their study does not need for the target device to be deconstructed and is able to recover between 95.7% and 99.6% of the RSA encryption key in under a second.
Even though the new attack still needs to be within 20 cm for the device, the researchers said that it is easy to hide EM-sniffing probes in locations such as tabletop surfaces or cellphone charging stations.
