New Rider Safety Feature Won’t Harm Privacy, Didi Assures

China’s biggest online car-hailing platform, Didi Chuxing, launched last Saturday a new feature that allows audio recording via its app. The company rolled out the safety measure after the murder of two female passengers by their drivers since May.

Passengers will now have to agree to the recording if they wish to use the service. While Didi assures that the recordings will be encrypted to protect privacy and deleted after 7 days, netizens still expressed their qualms on the measure.

Meanwhile, an expert from the China University of Political Science and Law said that even though the measure does not violate the privacy of the passenger or the driver, they should still be given a choice if they want to use it or not.
