New EPA Rule to Force Choice Between Health and Privacy

The US Environmental Protection Agency is reportedly mulling the adoption of a rule that would prohibit it from considering scientific studies that do not have underlying data available to the public.

It is said that the Strengthening Transparency in Regulatory Science will impose a choice between privacy and health and safety since the EPA will have to dismiss landmark studies where researchers cannot legally or ethically disclose personal health data or other confidential information about study participants.

However, EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt staunchly argued that the rule would ensure transparency, since researchers and community members may have important reasons for keeping some information confidential.
