22 Feb New Australian Home Affairs Minister: Facial Recognition May Replace Passports
Australia’s new Minister for Home Affairs recently commented that facial recognition may soon be used in lieu of passports, as the technology is already being trialed at Canberra Airport.
Peter Dutton told the National Press Club last Wednesday that he wanted travelers to walk seamlessly down off the A380 and depart the airport without having to pull out their passports. He added that there is a need to embrace the technology and apply it across the board along with mail and cargo consignments, since shipping and traveler numbers are quickly rising.
The Australian government had already signed an AU$22.5 million contract with Portugal-based Vision-Box for a first 105 new smartgates that will allow passengers to be processed via facial recognition.
