MS Office Telemetry Collection Violates GDPR, Dutch Gov’t Report Says

In a report released this week, Dutch authorities said that Microsoft Office’s telemetry data collection mechanism violates the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Investigators found the issues in ProPlus subscriptions of Office 2016 and Office 365, but also with the web-based version of Office 365. They said that the software had been collecting personal data on a large scale through Office’s built-in telemetry collection capabilities without properly informing users.

It was also found that the telemetry collection system sent Dutch user data to US servers, introducing the risk of having the information seized or queried by US law enforcement.
