24 Aug mHealth Apps May Not Be Protecting Dementia Patients Privacy
A recent study of 125 mHealth apps for dementia patients and caregivers showed that 39 of the 72 apps that collect user data didn’t have a privacy policy.
Ipsit Vahia, MD, medical director of Geriatric Psychiatry Outpatient Services at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Mass. said that users should not immediately assume that there are privacy and security measures present in the mental health apps that they are using.
Vahia, the lead author of the study, added that researchers, clinicians, as well as the patients and their families should be cautious when using mHealth apps, and that they should study an app’s privacy policy before using it.
