Marriott Reveals Extent of Starwood Data Breach

Hotel giant Marriott unveiled Friday last week that according to further investigation, the data of around 383 million customers had been compromised in the Starwood hacking incident.

The new figure is slightly lower than the 500 million which the hotel previously divulged. However, this is still a significantly large number which may still qualify as the largest internet security breach in history.

More worryingly,  Marriott said that over 8.6 million encrypted payment cards details had also been stolen in the hack. However, the hotel officially stated that the hack began in 2014, a year before it offered to purchase Starwood.
