23 Jan Japan Considers Expansion of Telecommunications Law to Shield Data from Tech Giants
Earlier this week, a panel of experts under the Japanese communications ministry called for the expansion of the country’s telecommunications law to include foreign businesses such as Google and other tech giants which are currently exempted from communication privacy provisions.
The expansion would subject non-Japanese tech companies to the secrecy in communications clause stipulated in Article 21 of Japan’s constitution. This means companies, even those headquartered outside Japan, would no longer be able to know the content of any communication or its destination without the consent of the user.
